More than two dozen Burger King stores in metro Detroit are owned by a Texas-based franchisee who is permanently ending operations in Michigan, with the majority of the restaurants closing in Detroit.
More than 400 jobs are being lost as a result of the change, including general managers, shift managers, and team members.
The franchisee of the eateries, EYM King of Michigan, based in Irving, Texas, notified the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity of the layoffs on March 22.
According to a WARN warning issued to Michigan’s labour department, the closings are the result of “unforeseen business circumstances” and failure to negotiate an agreement with Burger King Corp.
In addition to Dearborn Heights, Detroit, Ecorse, Ferndale, Flint, Highland Park, Livonia, Royal Oak, Southfield, Walled Lake, Warren, and Whitmore Lake, Burger King restaurants are closing around the country.
Calls to the Burger King corporate office in Miami, Florida, as well as messages left at EYM of Michigan in Irving, Texas, went unanswered. As of Monday afternoon, the Michigan website eymking.com appeared to be down.
