As the MTV Movie & TV Awards try to steer a festive course through a stormy Hollywood, the first significant live awards ceremony to telecast during the current screenwriters’ strike has retreated to a pre-taped event.
The red carpet for the Sunday event was rolled up after the evening’s host, Drew Barrymore, resigned in support of the writers. Stars and presenters would have to pass protesting writers in order to access the venue because the Writers Guild had still committed to picket. MTV completely cancelled the live event late on Saturday.
In a statement, Bruce Gillmer, an executive producer for MTV, said, “We’re pivoting away from a live event that still enables us to produce a memorable night full of exclusive sneak peeks, irreverent categories our audience has come to expect, and countless moments that will both surprise and delight.””Stranger Things,” “The Last of Us,” “The White Lotus,” “Wednesday,” “Wolf Pack,” “Yellowstone,” and “Yellowjackets” are among the greatest TV programmes nominated.
It’s already obvious that Jennifer Coolidge is a victor. The Comedic Genius Award will also go to Coolidge, who is competing for two prestigious honours.
After years of humorous work in films like “Best in Show,” “Legally Blonde,” and “American Pie,” Coolidge has rocketed to the A-list with winning roles in both seasons of “The White Lotus.” She becomes the sixth recipient of the honour since Jack Black received it in 2022.
Additionally, Coolidge is competing for two awards on Sunday: best humorous performance for “The White Lotus” and most frightening performance for “Shotgun Wedding.”
Austin Butler for “Elvis,” Florence Pugh for “Don’t Worry Darling,” KeKe Palmer for “Nope,” Michael B. Jordan for “Creed III,” and Tom Cruise for “Top Gun: Maverick” are the nominees in the individual categories for best performance in a movie.
Aubrey Plaza, “The White Lotus,” Christina Ricci, “Yellowjackets,” Jenna Ortega, “Wednesday,” Riley Keough, “Daisy Jones & The Six,” Sadie Sink, “Stranger Things,” and Selena Gomez, “Only Murders in the Building,” compete for best TV programme performance.
The best hero, best villain, best comic performance, best kiss, breakthrough performance, best fight, most frightened performance, best duet, best movie song, best competition series, and best host are other categories for the golden popcorn trophy. greatest actual on-screen team and greatest kick-ass cast are this year’s two new categories.
In addition to simulcasts on BET, BET Her, Comedy Central, CMT, Logo, MTV2, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, Pop, TV Land, and VH1, the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards will air on MTV on Sunday.
