Bloodsucking mythology is transformed into a family-friendly adventure in Netflix’s “Chupa” view the newest, exclusive trailer

The blood-sucking chupacabra of legend is being transformed by computer graphics into a cuddly, adorable creature.

The adventure-fantasy movie “Chupa” (streaming on Netflix April 7) is directed by Mexican filmmaker Jonás Cuarón, who is also the son of “Roma” director Alfonso Cuarón and co-writer of the Oscar-winning film “Gravity.” It centres on a shy 13-year-old named Alex (Evan Whitten) who travels from Kansas City to Mexico to meet his grandfather Chava (Demián Bichir). Alex makes a new hairy, magical buddy on his grandfather’s ranch, and the two set out on an exhilarating journey.

Cuarón drew on his memory of the first time he heard of the chupacabra mythology because he was a teenager in Mexico in the 1990s and was roughly the same age as Alex in the movie. Such things “were exciting as a kid,” he says.

In the trailer, a tense Alex, who is still grieving the loss of his father, is taken to Mexico by his mother as reports of chupacabra sightings dominate the news. Upon meeting the Chupa, Chava informs Alex, “He’ll be our little secret,” and warns him of “evil people out there” (Slater’s scientist Richard Quinn), who are after the misunderstood creature and want to use him for their own purposes.

According to reports, the chupacabra, which is Spanish for “goat-sucker,” was first seen in Puerto Rico in the early 1990s. According to the legend, sightings then spread throughout Latin America, and people started to think that chupacabras killed and drank the blood of goats.

There was a scary aspect to it, but Cuarón adds that there was also a lot of enthusiasm and wonder about something extraordinary being present.
