Henry Cavill has officially retired his iconic red cape.
In an Instagram post, the actor, who played the DC Comics character Superman in 2013’s “Man of Steel,” 2016’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and 2017’s “Justice League,” revealed that he will not be reprising the superhero role.
Cavill’s announcement comes on the heels of his Superman cameo in “Black Adam” earlier this year, which hinted at a return to the role in future films.
“I just met with James Gunn and Peter Safran, and I have bad news for everyone. “After all, I won’t be returning as Superman,” Cavill wrote. “After being told by the studio in October to announce my return prior to their hiring, this news isn’t easy, but that’s life.”
“The changing of the guard is something that happens,” he continued. That is something I respect. James and Peter are creating a universe. I wish them and everyone else involved with the new universe the best of luck and fortune.”
In October, Gunn, the writer-director behind “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “The Suicide Squad,” and veteran executive Safran were named co-chairmen and CEOs of the newly formed DC Studios.
“We’re honoured to be the stewards of these DC characters we’ve loved since we were kids,” Gunn and Safran said in a statement. “Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn and the rest of the DC stable of characters is only equaled by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent.
“We’re thrilled to enliven the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the most epic, beautiful, and grandiose stories ever told.”
In an interview with USA TODAY in November, Cavill discussed his “Black Adam” cameo as well as his affection for the Superman character.
“Over the last 11 years, Superman has been a formative part of my career and development,” Cavill said. “I sorely missed giving the audience the Superman they were clamouring for and the Superman they desired.”
