Spotify’s AI DJ has arrived.
In the midst of a surge of interest in AI tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the music streaming service unveiled a new feature called “DJ” that uses artificial intelligence to curate your music and offer commentary on music and artists.
Spotify announced the beta launch of DJ, which it describes as “a personalised AI guide,” on Wednesday. The feature combines a data-driven playlist of songs with an AI commentator with “a stunningly realistic voice.” (Imagine yourself as a radio DJ.)
Spotify claims that the DJ will know your music preferences so well that it will know what to play for you when you press the button.
According to the company, the feature combines its existing personalization technology, generative AI via OpenAI technology, and an AI voice from its Sonantic acquisition.
The DJ’s voice was inspired by Xavier “X” Jernigan, Spotify’s head of cultural partnerships and host of the service’s morning show “The Get Up.” Spotify stated that his voice served as the DJ’s “first model,” and that it will continue to iterate.
How do I activate Spotify’s AI DJ?
Spotify Premium users in the United States and Canada will be able to access the DJ in English beginning Wednesday.
To access the feature, go to your Music feed on Home in the Spotify mobile app and tap the DJ button to play. To change things up, press the DJ button at the bottom right of the screen.
