Monday night, the Arizona Cardinals’ season appeared to go from bad to worse.
Kyler Murray collapsed in a heap with what appeared to be a non-contact injury as he scrambled out of the pocket for a 3-yard gain just 77 seconds and three plays into the Cardinals’ Week 14 game against the New England Patriots. Before being carted off the field, the No. 1 pick in the 2019 draught was clearly in pain.
Despite the appearances, the Cardinals regarded Murray’s return as questionable due to a knee injury. He was officially ruled out shortly after. Murray was “sobbing” after reaching the bowels of State Farm Stadium, according to ESPN sideline reporter Lisa Salters.
“It didn’t look good,” Arizona head coach Kliff Kingsbury said after the Cardinals’ 27-13 loss.
Expect a compelling episode to be added to HBO’s “Hard Knocks in Season” coverage of the Cardinals this season. A season that began with Murray signing a contentious five-year, $230.5 million contract extension during training camp – one that included a mandatory study clause that was later removed – has devolved into a 4-9 slog and a near certainty that Arizona will not return to the playoffs.
Murray entered Monday with a career-low 87.1 passer rating and has frequently appeared to be at odds with Kingsbury. Murray had already missed two starts due to a hamstring injury this season.
The team is on pace for its worst record since Kingsbury took over in 2019, when Arizona went 5-10-1. The Cardinals are now tied for last place in the NFC West with the Los Angeles Rams, and they are 13th overall in the conference.
