JetBlue Flight from Barbados to JFK Evacuated Due to Lithium Battery Fire


A passenger’s cellphone battery caught fire aboard a JetBlue flight from Barbados to New York on Christmas Eve, forcing the plane to evacuate all passengers onto the tarmac, according to officials.

The incident occurred onboard JetBlue Flight 662, which had just landed at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport from Barbados, when the flight crew reported the smoking battery at around 9 p.m. EST.

According to the FAA, it was a cellphone.

According to the Port Authority, 133 people were evacuated using the plane’s emergency slides. Although seven people were injured, none were taken to the hospital.

The fire’s origin is being investigated.
