Miley Cyrus has moved on from heartbreak, and she’s documented her journey in a new song.
The singer, who has had hits in several genres including country, rock, and pop, released “Flowers,” a single from her upcoming 13-track album “Endless Summer Vacation,” on Friday.
Cyrus sings about finding self-love after heartbreak in the song. In a chorus that samples Bruno Mars’ 2012 hit “When I Was Your Man,” Cyrus appears to respond to Mars’ famous lyrics “I should have bought you flowers / And held your hand / Should have given you all my hours / When I had the chance / Take you to every party ’cause all you wanted to do was dance” with her own.
“I can go out and buy myself flowers,” she sings. “I can take myself dancing / And I can hold my own hand / Yeah, I can love myself better than you.”
Cyrus released the song on the 33rd birthday of her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth, which her fans believe was no coincidence.
Cyrus and Hemsworth divorced in 2019, less than a year into their marriage and ten years after meeting on a movie set. The ex-couple met while filming an adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ “The Last Song” in 2009 and announced their engagement in 2012. Cyrus reintroduced her engagement ring in early 2016, and the couple married in Tennessee in December 2018.
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth split up less than a year after their wedding.
In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2020, Cyrus revealed that, contrary to popular belief, she was unhappy and on a downward spiral in 2018.
“‘She has a man. She’s living in a house and pretending to be a wife.'” Cyrus added that she was also testing the waters with drugs and alcohol. “Dude, I was way off my path at that time than any other time my sanity had been called into question.”
