Twitter fires half of its public policy team in charge of policing child porn on the platform.

In the week before Christmas, Elon Musk continued to lay off Twitter employees, focusing on the public policy and engineering teams.

Reuters reported that half of the remaining members of the already small public policy team were let go on Wednesday.

“Yesterday was my last day at Twitter,” one of those employees, Theodora Skeadas, tweeted on Thursday. “It’s difficult to express how grateful I am to have had this extraordinary opportunity.”

The public policy team moderates content that is especially sensitive, such as posts containing child porn and evidence of war crimes.

Sinead McSweeney, Twitter’s global vice president for public policy, had previously clashed with Musk during his tenure. Reuters reports that she left the company on Thursday.

A number of engineers were also laid off last week, according to the technology industry website The Information.

Since Musk took over as CEO of Twitter in late October, the company’s workforce has been reduced by 75%. Hundreds of employees resigned in mid-November after Musk told them they needed to leave if they weren’t willing to go “hardcore” and work long hours.

Musk, 51, has stated that he is attempting to minimise Twitter’s losses. He paid $44 billion for the company and anticipates a loss of at least $3 billion this year.
