Want to go outside and explore? Smithsonian Journeys introduces fresh, active journeys

Some tourists define a vacation as unbroken time spent sipping cold drinks in a beach chair. Smithsonian Journeys has you covered if, however, exploring volcanoes and hiking glaciers is more your style.

In 2024, the Smithsonian Institution’s travel programme will launch a brand-new lineup of excursions featuring journeys jam-packed with expert-led outdoor activities in locations all over the globe. Ten Smithsonian Active Journeys itineraries are available to choose from, each with three to five departures the following year and a cap of 18 people.

According to Lynn Cutter, senior vice president at Smithsonian Travel, “our commitment to lifelong learning and our passion for exploring the world drives us to continually develop authentic, enriching experiences for our travellers.” These active vacations will provide a personal and meaningful approach to interact with a place and its inhabitants while also immersing oneself in the beauties of nature.

How does Smithsonian Active Journeys prepare travellers?

The excursions, which “range in pace and activity level,” will be led by local guides, the press release states. In February 2024, the first of the itineraries will start.

Visitors on Costa Rica Treetops and Trails: An Active Journey can trek and take walks with naturalists to discover the Arenal Volcano’s base, see the beaches and wildlife in Manuel Antonio National Park, and more. Additionally, they can go canyoneering, zip-lining, and have lunch at a nearby farm.

Travellers who take Glaciers and Waterfalls: An Active Journey to Iceland will walk across a glacier and inside a lava tube while learning about the region’s geology. Additionally, visitors can meet Icelandic farmers, visit a Viking museum, and explore icebergs and black-sand beaches.

Other itineraries offer the ability to observe mountain gorillas in their native environment in Rwanda, ride through Chile’s Maipo wine region, and more.

What are the prices for Smithsonian Active Journeys?

Based on double occupancy, the majority of the itineraries range from $3,300 to $5,600 per person. Daily excursions and activities, the majority of meals, gratuities, applicable internal flights, and more are all included in the vacations.

Bookings can be made on the Smithsonian Journeys website.
